My Mother is Lonely and I Feel Guilty

Like so many people from my generation, I moved far from home in search of better opportunities. I left behind my parents. I try to stay connected by phone, but I can sense a deep loneliness growing. Without visibility into their health, security and emotional well-being I feel terrible, helpless, and rife with worry. My situation is all too common — friends relate stories of their own parents who are hundreds of miles and not oceans away, and I hear new stories every day.

According to the Wall Street Journal, 56 million Americans will be aged 65 years and older next year — An increase from 40 million, a decade prior. As the number of elderly increase in our country’s population, so does the need for their caregivers.
